Facial wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and certain scars
can be improved by a variety of skin resurfacing
techniques. Chemical peels, dermabrasion and laser
skin resurfacing are possible options.
How do I know if I am a candidate for skin
resurfacing?
Aging, sun exposure, heredity, nutrition, smoking
and lifestyle factors contribute to facial wrinkling
and skin blotchiness. Nor is resurfacing dependant on
a given age. People with skin conditions come in all
ages with certain characteristics that may make you a
candidate for one technique rather than another. Laser
resurfacing is not painful but it can require a
recovery period of ten days up to two weeks in which
your participation is necessary. By the end of your
second recovery week hypoallergenic make-up can be
worn. Most of my patients are comfortable returning to
their daily social activities after two weeks.
Following the immediate post operative period your new
skin will be thin and have a pinkish hue, however over
the next three months as it thickens your wrinkles
will continue to diminish as will this color.
To maintain the healthy benefits of the regenerated
skin patients should dedicate themselves to an
extended skin care program. Sunscreen is mandatory in
the postoperative period and probably a good habit to
continue. Myself, as with our certified estheticians,
who are skin care specialists will advise you on the
best long-term treatment program for maintaining your
new healthy skin. I've
heard about chemical peels. How are they performed?
A chemical peel solution is applied to either part
of your face or the entirety. My proven method is to
apply the solution lightly with a sponge, brush or
soft pad. The depth of the "peeling" action
is determined by several factors: how long it remains
on the skin, whether the solution is applied lightly
or vigorously rubbed onto the skin. |
